Bontebok
National Park, proclaimed in 1961 to save
the bontebok from extinction is now sanctuary
to a thriving population of bontebok,
together with Cape mountain zebras and
a scattering of other antelope such as
grysbok, grey rhebok, duiker, red hartebeest
and steenbok. The 2 786ha Park is also
notable for its 200 or so different kinds
of bird and for its floral wealth: wild
olive, yellowwood and milkwood trees grace
the banks of the Breede River's banks.
The park has a 25-km road network and
for the slightly more energetic, there
are two walking trails. Picnic and camping
sites are available on the banks of the
Breede River.
De
Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve is a popular
destination for people and whales alike.
The reserve hosts 3 000 ha of unspoilt
Cape fynbos and a marine protected area
which is home to an abundance of marine
organisms. De Hoop is home to the endangered
and rare Cape mountain zebras and Cape
vultures, the bontebok, the De Hoop vlei
and the best whale watching between July
and November. De Hoop's rich diversity
of wildlife, plants and culture makes
it a unique experience to visitors.
Marloth
Nature Reserve situated along the southern
slopes of the Langeberg Mountains, is
a botanist's dream. It has an abundance
of wild flowers and fynbos. Hiking trails
have been established and for those who
wish to undertake the entire 81 km trail,
there are six huts positioned at regular
intervals. There are several day walks.
Buffeljachts
Watersports offer sunset & breakfast
cruises on the Buffeljags Dam. They also
offer you the opportunity to enjoy walking,
bird-watching, angling, river rides, canoeing
and thrilling fuffi-slide rides.
Visit
Dassies to enjoy a 4 x 4 or 4 x 2 track.
Dassies also offer a mountain bike trail,
nature trail (25 km) along the Breederiver.
There is numerous wild life, birds and
fish to see on this 600 ha nature reserve.

tours in and around Swellendam. Also for
