Take
a walk or cycle through the village to
enjoy breathtaking scenery. Experience
the peace and tranquility the residents
of Suurbraak call their "Place of
Paradise".
Community
guides are available for village walks
and mountain hikes. There are basic braai
facilities alongside the river with spectacular
pools. The riverine areas offer great
bird-watching opportunities.
Grootvadersbosch
Nature Reserve comprises 250 ha of forest.
The indigenous forest is noteworthy in
the southwestern Cape and the largest
remaining example in the Langeberg. Most
of the thirty-five typical forest tree
species are present, including stinkwood,
yellowwood, red alder and the dominant
ironwood. Baboons and small mammals are
plentiful, grysbok occur on the forest
fringes and in fynbos and bushbuck are
abundant. Two day-walks and a short cycle
trail wind through Knysna high forest
and mountain fynbos, with excellent bird
watching opportunities - 196 species have
been recorded.
The
Bontebok National Park is a 2 786 ha expanse
of attractive heath country flanking the
Breede River. The reserve is sanctuary
to a thriving population of 200 bontebok,
together with Cape mountain zebras and
a scattering of other antelope such as
grysbok, grey rhebok, duiker, red hartebeest
and steenbok. The park is notable for
its 200 or so different kinds of bird
and for its floral wealth. Wild olive,
yellowwood and milkwood trees grace the
Breede River's banks and blood red aloes
bloom in June and July. Many-coloured
wildflowers decorate the fynbos countryside
during the springtime months.
