A Dutch Reformed congregation was established here in 1922 and the town was laid out three years later. Visit the Dutch Reformed Church, the only historical beacon in Riviersonderend in remembrance of yesteryear.

The Blue Crane, South Africa's national bird has found sanctuary in the pastures around the Riviersonderend area. They can be seen in pairs or in groups, foraging in grain fields alongside the highways and byways of this region.

The Caledon Casino, Hotel & Spa is situated about 79 km along the N2 from Riviersonderend. The healing powers of the hot springs have been renowned for centuries and were enjoyed by the original Khoi-San inhabitants. The Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum is situated 76 km from Riviersonderend along the R317 road. The Shipwreck Museum is the only museum of its kind in South Africa. It displays an extensive collection of artefacts and furniture from ships wrecked along the South African coastline. It also contains showpieces specific to the Overberg.
