The
annual Horse and Cart Festival is a major
outdoor attraction held at Napier. Year
round horse and cart tours is a unique
Napier activity to be enjoyed by the whole
family from years gone by.
Walk
the circular 5 km circular route through
the Napier Nature Reserve. Enjoy the splendid
views of the area.
Mounatain
Fynbos Tractor Rides on Kleinsanddrif
Farm situated halfway between Bredasdorp
and Napier offers guided tours with tractor
and trailer up the picturesque mountain
overlooking the Aghulhas Plain, the southern-most
tip of Africa. See beautiful fynbos flowers
and many species of birds, including the
endangered Blue Crane. The tractor ride
is followed by traditional "potjiekos"
served in your host's Jannie and Helena
van Zyl's "veldkombuis" (country-kitchen).
Tours are available on Wednesdays and
Saturdays at 10h00 and 14h00. Advance
bookings are essential.
Heuningberg
Nature Reserve, situated at the foot of
the Bredasdorp Mountain (16 km from Napier)
offers spectacular sightings of many species
of Protea and Erica species. The red Bredasdorp
lily can be sighted during April and May.
The reserve has various 2 - 15 km hiking
trails.
De
Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve is a popular
destination for people and whales alike.
The reserve hosts 3 000 ha of unspoilt
Cape fynbos and a marine protected area
which is home to an abundance of marine
organisms. De Hoop is home to the endangered
and rare Cape mountain zebras and Cape
vultures, the bontebok, the De Hoop vlei
and the best whale watching between July
and November. De Hoop's rich diversity
of wildlife, plants and culture makes
it a unique experience to visitors.
De
Mond Nature Reserve lies at the mouth
of the Heuningnes River. The 954 ha reserve
is managed as a satellite of the De Hoop
Nature Reserve. It supports several species
of small animals and has a rich and varied
birdlife, making it ideal for birdwatching.
The reserve is particularly important
for the protection of breeding colonies
of the threatened Damara and Caspian terns
(South Africa's most endangered coastal
bird) and the rare African black oystercatcher,
(South Africa's second most threatened
coastal bird).
