The Aghulhas Plain has a great diversity of flora. The Aghulhas area contains representatives of unique vegetation such as limestone fynbos. Although most species bloom between May and September, there are flowers to be enjoyed in any season.

Spookdraai Hiking Trail can be completed in two hours. It has been created to add an extra dimension to the value of the visitor's stay in this region. It takes the hiker on a short journey to explore the fynbos, birdlife and historical points of interest. Look-out spots highlight the southern-most towns, the sea and the point where the two oceans meet.

De Mond nature reserve lies at the mouth of the Heuningnes River, between Struisbaai and Arniston. De Mond is 954 ha in size and is managed as a satellite of the De Hoop Nature Reserve. De Mond has a rich and varied birdlife, making it ideal for birdwatching. The reserve is particularly important for the protection of breeding colonies of the threatened Damara (South Africa's most endangered coastal bird) and Caspian terns. The rare African black oystercatcher (South Africa's second most threatened coastal bird) also favours the resrve. There are no overnight fascilities at De Mond, but visitors are welcome to spend a day on the reserve. Picnic sites are available, no braai facilities. The 7 km Sterna Trail leads through riverine vegetation, dune forest and the stabilized dunes, along the coast to the river mouth and the saltmarshes.
