The
Kogelberg Biosphere Nature Reserve has
day hiking trails and one overnight trail.
Permits are necessary for hiking. This
is a magnificent fynbos area with 1 600
different plant species, 15 species are
endemic to the Biosphere.
Kleinmond
Coastal and Mountain Bike Reserve offers
an interesting coastal walk and other
trails in the mountain. The comprehensive
book "Where to Walk in Kleinmond"
gives more information about the hiking
trails and can be bought at the Tourism
Bureau. The coastal walk among the rocks
on the beachfront is part of the reserve.
No permits are needed for these trails.
Bot
River Wetlands is home to thousand of
waterfowl. Canoeing is allowed but a permit
is required for fishing.
Catch
a glimpse of the wild horses at the Rooisands
Nature Reserve. South Africa's only herd
of wild horses found in a wetland habitat.
Kasteelkop
road leads to Kasteelkop Picnic Area,
which offers magnificent views over mountain,
sea and town. Spectacular flora and fauna
species are found in this small area that
forms part of the core of the Kogelberg
Biosphere Reserve. The road is suitable
for 4 x 4 vehicles. Permits are required
and obtainable at the Tourism Bureau.
Sandown
Bay and Palmiet Beach has white sandy
beaches stretching along the coast. Watch
out for strong currents. The lagoon area
at Palmiet and Kleinmond is a fairly safe
swimming place for children under adult
supervision.
Southern
Right whales can be seen from the harbour,
Palmiet Beach, along Beach Road, from
the hotel and Sandown Bay Beach from May
to December.
White
water rafting, tubing and canoeing on
Palmiet River is an adrenaline adventure
not to be missed. The Palmiet River (by
the bridge) has become a popular picnic
site. Try jumping from the 6m high rocks
into the river.
Dive
for abalone (perlemoen), rock lobster,
alikreukel, venus ear, black mussel, white
mussel, limpet, periwinkle, octopus, bloodworm,
red bait, sea urchin, oyster. Please note
a permit is required for harvesting any
marine species and restrictions apply.
Abalone and Rock Lobster have a closed
season.
Angle
from the rocks. Galjoen, Red Roman, Blacktail,
White Steenbras, Musselcracker, Geelbek,
Kob, Red Stumpnose, Hottentot. Please
note a permit is required and restrictions
apply. Galjoen has a closed season.
Kleinmond
has facilities where other active sports
such as tennis, bowls and jukskei can
be enjoyed.
Play
golf at nearby Arabella Estate or the
Kleinmond Golf Club.
