| Riviersonderend,
a small farming village with a peaceful
rural atmosphere situated on the N2 highway,
approximately 160 km from Cape Town. The
town of Riviersonderend
and its surrounding farms are known for
sightings of South Africa's national bird
- the blue crane.
There is much uncertainty about the origin
of the name Riviersonderend.
Willem ten Thyne, who was at the Cape
in 1673, referred to the river as the
"sine fine flumen" ("River
sonder eynde"), which had its source
in the mountains. In 1707, Jan Hartogh,
who was a horticulturist in service of
the Dutch East India Company, as well
as a traveler, referred to the river as
the "Kanna-kam-kanna" The word
could have been derived from the Hessequa
local tribe of herdsmen, which meant "water
endless water".
Riviersonderend
of "Rivier Zonder End" as it
was known in earlier days, was established
in 1923, when Ms Edith McIntyre sold her
farm Tierhoek for 6 000 pounds to the
church council, for the establishment
of the local Dutch Reformed congregation.
Many visitors to the area have noticed
the distinct brown colour of the mountain
water that originates from the southern
slopes of the Riviersonderend
Mountains. The colour
is caused due to organic plant material,
and is renowned as the purest drinking
water.
Riviersonderend
has many hidden secrets well protected
by its residents. If you are someone who
takes pleasure in exploring and discovering
what nature can unfold, taking only pictures
and leaving nothing but footprints, Riviersonderend
welcomes you!
