Sharks
are quite possibly the world's most
feared animals. From the smallest
sand
shark
to the enormous
whale
shark, they are
sleek, muscled, and some are almost
as agile as a dolphin. There is
no doubt that they are the most
evolved predators in the ocean.
Row upon row of teeth and capable
of sensing the blood of an injured
animal from over a kilometre, its
not surprising that they are the
most feared creature beneath the
waves. And of them all, the
Great
White is the most
awesome.
This magnificent creature is in
fact, a creature which should be
more respected than feared. Owing
to massive negative media publicity
over the years, the
sharks
have become one of the most maligned,
misunderstood, even hated animals
on our fragile planet. They have
been pursued, hunted and indiscriminately
slaughtered over the years, to the
point where many species are endangered.
If we can dispel some of the
hype and myth and the fear which
surrounds these magnificent animals,
and even if through our commitment
we only introduce some element
of objective perspective to the
people whom we come into contact
with, then we have at least made
some contribution to maintaining
the natural balance in at least
one ecosystem in our communal
home earth.
In South Africa the Great
White has been
protected since 1990 - and Gansbaai
is the best place to see them.
Most shark
cage diving takes
place off Dyer and Geyser Islands,
about 6 nautical miles (11 km)
offshore. Dyer Island has become
known as one of the most unique
areas in the world, to successfully
view the Great
White shark. Dyer
Island (larger island) is a breeding
mecca for Cape Fur Seals and currently
home to approximately 20 000.
There are experienced professionals
operating shark
cage diving and
surface
viewing trips
in Gansbaai.
Groups depart daily from Kleinbaai
Harbour onboard spacious catamarans,
providing ultimate stability at
sea. The boats anchor in the channel
(Shark
Alley) between
Dyer and Geyser Islands. Only
permit holders have access to
this small, 6 meter deep area.
Sharks
are surface feeders, therefore
classic surface attacks are not
to be missed for anything in the
world. These excursions are more
than just thrill-seeking adventures,
they are educational experiences.
