Clarence
Drive provides
pleasant whale watching spots,
all along the route where
you can stop and watch the
Southern
Right Whales visit
the sheltered shallow bays
of the South African coastline
each year. Clarence
Drive leads
through the Kogelberg
Biosphere, the first and
only Biosphere in South Africa
to be proclaimed by United
Nations' Educational, Scientific
and Cultural Organisation
(UNESCO): a testament to the
stunning diversity and large
number of its flowering plants,
many of which are found nowhere
else in the fynbos biome.
The whole Hangklip-Kleinmond
area (Rooiels, Pringle Bay,
Betty's Bay and Kleinmond)
is to be managed according
to international principles,
which aim to combine conservation,
sustainable use of natural
resources and wise development.
Driving along scenic Clarence
Drive leads
to the appearance of Kogel
Bay, with long lines of surf
breaking on the shining white
sand, and famous among surfers
and topless sunbathers for
its pleasant atmosphere and
sheltered cove against the
occasional howling southeaster.
A definite stop, even if you
don't feel like climbing down
the stairs to visit this unique
beach, there is a place where
you can park your vehicle
and enjoy the views from above.
Bathers at Kogel Bay have
to be cautious of currents
and a dangerous backwash.
Rooiels
is a small seaside village
next on route. Rooiels
Bay is a safe
and attractive spot for a
family day on the beach or
just stopping over at the
Drummond
Arms Hotel & Pub
for light refreshment. The
R44 now swings inland to Pringle
Bay, the next seaside
village to discover about
5 kilometres from Rooiels.
Pringle
Bay is much
like Rooiels,
except in recent years it
has developed more rapidly.
Pringle
Bay has a
lovely safe beach and various
places to enjoy a light lunch.
Betty's
Bay, once
the site of a whaling station,
is situated 10 kilometres
along Clarence
Drive from
Pringle
Bay. Betty's
Bay is home
to the Harold
Porter National Botanical
Garden and one of the
only two mainland Jackass
Penguin Colonies in South
Africa. Travelling from Betty's
Bay onwards,
you will cross the Palmiet
River and thereafter reach
the first Kleinmond
houses.
Kleinmond
is a seaside resort at the
foot of the Palmietberg that
is becoming increasingly popular.
Also known as the 'commercial'
capital of the Hangklip-Kleinmond
area is the most urbanized
town in this area and provides
most amenities. Be sure to
visit the new harbour area,
where you can buy honey, dried
fynbos flowers, arts &
crafts or just sit down and
relax to enjoy a cappuccino
and black forest cheesecake.
From Kleinmond
the road leads past the Bot
River Estuary
and the award-winning Arabella
Hotel & Spa, situated
on the banks of the Bot River
lagoon. The road comes to
its end and you can decide
to turn right and follow the
signs to go to Hermanus,
heart of the Whale
Route or turn left, and
go to the Elgin
Valley of Fruit &
Flowers or venture along the
N2 and explore the countryside.
